Grand Challenges in Global Mental Health: Integrating Mental Health into Chronic Disease Care Provision in Low- and Middle-Income Countries

The National Institutes of Health, more commonly referred to as the NIH, is an agency operating within the United States Department of Health and Human Services that is greatly responsible for financially supporting most of the country's biomedical and health-related research studies.

The programs of the NIH are all tailored to help in the achievement of its leading agency mission which is to "seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce the burdens of illness and disability."

In keeping with this mission, the National Institutes of Health has recently formed a partnership with the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in order to establish the Grand Challenges in Global Mental Health: Integrating Mental Health into Chronic Disease Care Provision in Low- and Middle-Income Countries Program.

The program essentially seeks to solicit project grant applications intending to promote the establishment of an evidence-based, contextually relevant, and cost-effective care interventions aimed towards the treatment of patients with co-morbid mental and chronic physical conditions in low and middle-income countries.

In addition, the program will also give high priority to the research studies that seeks to anchor on pre-existing chronic disease care and treatment platforms which can be incorporated to the successful management of mental illnesses.

With that, the initiatives that will be supported under the program should focus on the following specific objectives:
