Grants From The National Science Foundation

Most of the research studies that have been funded by the National Science Foundation have been considered scientific breakthroughs. In fact, NSF-funded researchers have already won 180 Nobel Prizes.

Researchers and investigators can obtain financial assistance from the NSF through grants and cooperative agreements. The NSF will not directly employ researchers or operate laboratories. Instead, it will support scientists, engineers and educators directly through their own home institutions such as universities and colleges.

The National Science Foundation promotes technological advancements by providing program descriptions, program announcements and program solicitations. In addition, the NSF also accepts unsolicited proposals at any given time, as long as they are intended for research and education projects, in any existing or emerging field of science and engineering.

As a result, the NSF receives an estimate of 40,000 proposals each year for education, research, and training projects. The NSF caters to almost every level of investigator, including undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, K-12 educators and small business programs.

Investigators and researchers that are interested in submitting a proposal to NSF will have to submit it via Fastlane or Grants.gov. Both paper and online applications need to be in accordance with the general guidelines contained in the NSF Grant Proposal Guide which can be downloaded electronically or can be obtained at the NSF Publications Clearinghouse, accessible via telephone (703) 292-7827 or by e-mail from nsfpubs@nsf.gov.
