The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, otherwise referred to as HUD, is an independent agency in the Executive branch of the federal government that is primarily responsible for increasing the rates of homeownership and supporting community development.

HUD works in a matter that will lead them to the realization of their agency's mission, which is to "strengthen the housing market to bolster the economy and protect consumers; meet the need for quality affordable rental homes: utilize housing as a platform for improving quality of life; build inclusive and sustainable communities free from discrimination."

The United States Office of Rural Development has been running the Low-Income Housing Repair Loans and Grants program wherein they intend to assist very low-income income homeowners in rural areas in the difficult and costly process of putting their homes up for repair.
