Mechanisms Mediating Osteoarthritis in Aging

Initially, the program intends to support research studies that seek to explore the biological mechanisms that are associated with non-inflammatory joint degeneration, as seen in Osteoarthritis. These studies will consequently attempt to determine certain genes, biochemical pathways, and proteins that will contribute to the onset of joint degeneration.

This process will eventually enable researchers to identify the events and processes that will lead to joint degeneration, the functional characterization of proteins that are involved in the process, and the manner by which these gene products contribute to joint degeneration.

As a result, this deepened understanding could potentially lead to the timely prevention and more efficient treatment regimen for people suffering from Osteoarthritis.

The institutions and organizations that will be considered eligible to submit an application under the Mechanisms Mediating Osteoarthritis in Aging are the following:

a) Higher Education Institutions such as Public/State Controlled Institutions of Higher Education and Private Institutions of Higher Education

b) Hispanic-serving Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Tribally Controlled Colleges and Universities (TCCUs), Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian Serving Institutions

c) Nonprofit organizations other than institutions of higher education

d) For-Profit Organizations such as Small Businesses

e) State Governments, County Governments, City or Township Governments, Special District Governments, Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Federally Recognized), and Indian/Native American Tribal Governments (Other than Federally Recognized)
