This funding opportunity amounting to $42,700,000 will be issued solely as a cooperative agreement specially intended for extramural investigators.

Interested investigators who are eligible to participate in this program are required to submit their applications electronically to the Grants.gov website on or before October 31, 2011.

Applicants will be deemed eligible to participate in this program if they are/belong to any of the following:

a) individuals with the capacity to meet the requirements and objectives of this funding opportunity

b) for-profit, nonprofit, public, and private organizations, such as universities and colleges, hospitals, laboratories, and companies

c) local, state, and Federal Government agencies.

The primary objective of this Military Medical Research and Development program, one in which the Medical Tropical Research Laboratory Program Infectious Disease Research Award is a part of, is to reduce illness and injury among US military personnel through the utilization of basic and applied medical research which are made possible through the provision of grants and funding opportunities to educational and research institutions.

The Department of Defense, the mother agency that is funding this project, is a US federal department that is responsible for protecting the nation against wars and attacks. The agency does this by focusing on five major areas, specifically: peacekeeping and war-fighting efforts, Homeland Security, evacuation and humanitarian causes.
