The United States Department of Commerce is the US federal government's agency responsible for looking after the country's economic growth.

The agency's work is geared towards the promotion of more job opportunities and the improvement of living standards for all Americans through the creation of infrastructure that promotes economic growth, technological competitiveness, and sustainable development.

The National Estuarine Research Reserve System Land
Acquisition and Construction Program is essential to both the Department of Commerce and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration because it enables them to protect and preserve Estuarine areas and at the same time conduct research and educational studies that will help the current and future generation understand marine and wildlife conditions.

Some of the previous projects funded under the NERR program included acquisition of lands to be included in reserves, the process of site selection and the development of management plan, construction projects, operation of the reserves, and finally, resource stewardship, research and educational activities.
