The National Endowment for the Humanities, more commonly referred to as NEH, is an independent federal government agency of the United States government that is primarily responsible for supporting research studies, education, preservation, and public programs in the field of the humanities.

The initiatives of the NIH are geared towards the accomplishment of their overall agency mission which is "Because democracy demands wisdom, the National Endowment for the Humanities serves and strengthens our Republic by promoting excellence in the humanities and conveying the lessons of history to all Americans."

In keeping with this mission, the National Endowment for the Humanities has recently established the Summer Seminars and Institutes Program wherein it aims to provide support to faculty development programs in the field of the humanities for school, college, and university teachers.

The program intends to achieve this objective by conducting the Summer Seminars and Institutes program for a span of two to five weeks after. The NEH hopes that this amount of time is enough for the participating school, college, and university teachers to acquire a thorough understanding of the following topics:

1) Knowledge and understanding of the humanities by in terms of focusing on significant topics, texts, and issues

2) Intellectual vitality and professional development of teachers and educators
